“In virtually every culture throughout history, human beings have used toning, chanting and singing to praise their Creator and to heal their bodies and spirits. Our conventional Judeo-Christian culture is almost devoid of this healing tradition. Perhaps to fill this need, toning – the sustained, vibratory sounding of single tones, often vowel sounds, without the use of melody, rhythm or words – is quickly becoming a valuable tool for spiritually awakening people. Bypassing language entirely, toning allows us to express the heart and soul directly, quieting the over-active left brain.“ (The Healing Voice by Joy Gardner)
I don’t know about you, but I was brought up to smile, sit still and be quiet. Making sounds was not encouraged and as an adult my tendency is still towards the quiet end of things.
That said, I am now finding the freedom that sound has to offer. I am realizing just how restrictive language can be and how unbounded sound vibration really is. Our entire world is made up of sound vibrations (but that’s for another post).
Try this for yourself:
How are you feeling? What 3 words describe how you are feeling right now in this moment? Now take each word, one by one, and sound that feeling. What sound express your feeling? Go ahead, no one can probably hear you.
Do you notice a difference between when you state a word describing your feeling and when you make a sound describing your feeling? Does one set the feeling free to either release the energy around it (frustration, anger, confusion, for instance) or to dance with the energy in celebration of it (joy, happy, peaceful, for instance).
Words are left brained and limited by language. As humans we can “cap” our emotions and feelings through words, moving them into a more intellectual experience. Sounds are the universal language and can communicate so much more than words could ever do. They express an aliveness that words struggle to achieve.
Can you sound out your feelings to express them as honestly as possible? Next time someone asks you how you are, sound it out. I’m sure there will be a good laugh, or a terrified questioner, but either way, they’ll get it.
Hummmmmmmmmm…..
